The Russian military has undergone a significant tactical shift, moving away from its traditional reliance on artillery and tanks to incorporate an increasing number of FPV (First-Person View) drones into its combat strategy. This strategic adjustment comes in response to the evolving battlefield dynamics, particularly the expansion of Ukrainian "kill zones" that have rendered traditional Russian weaponry less effective.
Historically, the Russian military has followed a doctrine emphasizing massed fires, utilizing a combination of tanks and artillery to destroy enemy defenses before advancing maneuver forces. This approach was effective in the early stages of the conflict with Ukraine but has faced a significant challenge from Ukrainian "kill zones," which are patrolled by drones specifically designed to target Russian vehicles and personnel. These zones have expanded in many regions, extending beyond the effective range of Russian artillery and armor, limiting their utility in the ongoing conflict.
To counter this challenge, Russia has turned to FPV drones. Recent reports suggest that Russia is launching thousands of radio-controlled FPV drones per day in areas such as Druzhkivka and Dobropillia, as part of its efforts to capture these cities. This surge in drone usage coincides with a realignment of some of Russia's armored units into drone-assault formations. By employing drones to deliver fires, Russia can adhere to its traditional doctrine while replacing many of the roles previously performed by artillery and tanks.
The shift in strategy is a direct response to the effectiveness of Ukrainian drones in undermining Russia's traditional approach to ground combat. Ukrainian drones have expanded the depth at which Russian forces are vulnerable, affecting tanks and armored vehicles first. These kill zones currently extend 10 to 15 kilometers forward of Ukrainian lines, with some units striking targets out to 30 kilometers. This expansion has extended the threat even farther by targeting longer-range artillery systems and their supporting infrastructure, making it increasingly difficult for Russia to employ its traditional combination of armor and artillery near the front.
This shift is also reflected in the Russian Ministry of Defense's messaging. Throughout much of the war, the ministry frequently posted videos of artillery systems conducting fire missions. However, these posts have diminished in recent months, indicating a reduced relevance of artillery in frontline operations.
As part of its reduced reliance on traditional systems for delivering fires, the Russian military is reportedly disbanding some tank battalions and reallocating younger servicemembers to drone units, while assigning other personnel to assault units. This reallocation is particularly evident in northern Sumy and Kharkiv oblasts, where Russian forces are undergoing a significant transformation in their force structure.
The adoption of FPV drones by the Russian military represents a significant shift in its combat strategy. While it remains to be seen how effective this new approach will be in the face of a highly sophisticated and technologically advanced adversary, it is clear that the battlefield is evolving rapidly, and both sides are adapting to these changes. The increased use of drones in combat is likely to become a defining feature of modern warfare, with implications for the future of military tactics and technology.
