KATHMANDU, Nepal – In the wake of a catastrophic flood caused by a glacier collapse, Nepal is facing an unprecedented challenge as rescue teams, including international experts, race against time to save over 900 workers believed to be trapped underground in hydropower projects. The devastating flood, which has killed at least 903 people and left 4,247 missing, has also caused widespread destruction across the border in China's Tibet region.
The flood, which struck on Wednesday, was caused by the collapse of a glacier along the Nepal-Tibet border, resulting in a massive deluge of ice, rock, mud, and debris. The disaster has left a trail of destruction, with hundreds of bodies, many of them unidentified, being buried in mass graves as the humid weather accelerates decomposition. The situation is further complicated by the fact that the capital city of Kathmandu's morgues have reached capacity, prompting families to seek information about missing loved ones at other hospitals.
Rescue operations are ongoing in the dark of night, with earth-moving equipment and soldiers using torchlights to dig through mud and rocks in search of trapped workers. Nepal army spokesperson Raja Ram Basnet told Reuters that the challenge lies in the large amount of debris deposited, which is making it difficult to open the tunnels where the workers are believed to be trapped.
The Red Cross has estimated that more than 90,000 people have been affected by the disaster, and Prime Minister Balendra Shah has described the flood as an "unprecedented and devastating natural disaster." Despite adverse weather conditions, difficult terrain, and ongoing risks, the government is determined to save the lives of its citizens. Nearly 21,000 security personnel, civilian workers, and volunteers are involved in the rescue efforts.
China, a neighboring country, has offered its support, mobilizing over 2,100 rescue workers and allocating at least 220 million yuan ($33 million) to support relief efforts. Chinese soldiers have used life-detection equipment to search for the missing, while nine tunnel rescue experts have been sent to Nepal. Beijing has also shared satellite information with Nepalese authorities.
While accessibility has been restored on many roads and highways, nearly 40 kilometers of roads have been swept away, presenting additional challenges in delivering aid to affected communities. The government and various agencies are working tirelessly to overcome these obstacles and ensure that aid reaches those in need.
The disaster has raised concerns about the impact of climate change on the region. Prime Minister Shah has emphasized the need for a complete assessment of the damage, acknowledging the challenges in compiling such a report. Despite the grim situation, the government remains committed to moving forward with determination to save lives and rebuild the affected areas.
