Russian Drone Incursion in Moldovan Airspace Narrowly Misses Ukrainian Presidential Flight, Norwegian Premier Discloses

A private corporate jet transporting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy experienced a perilous encounter with an unmanned aerial vehicle while preparing for departure in Moldovan airspace, according to remarks delivered by Norway's prime minister. The incident highlights the growing risks facing international aviation and regional security near the borders of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Speaking during an interview with the Norwegian national broadcaster NRK, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre revealed that the Ukrainian leader’s aircraft had come dangerously close to a hostile unmanned system during takeoff operations. Støre underscored the severe security conditions surrounding the wartime president, noting that having an aircraft nearly struck by a drone represents the stark everyday reality confronting Ukraine's leadership.

Although Støre brought the critical encounter to light, the Norwegian head of government refrained from offering exact technical measurements or specifying the precise distance separating the Ukrainian jet from the intruding drone. Official observers and defense analysts noted that even without precise proximity measurements, the presence of an armed or stray drone near a moving head-of-state aircraft presents a severe aerial safety threat.

The near-miss occurred as President Zelenskyy was initiating a multi-leg diplomatic journey from Moldova to Western and North American destinations. The Ukrainian president was scheduled to land in Oslo on Tuesday evening to pay respects and attend the state funeral of King Harald of Norway, after which he was slated to continue his diplomatic route across the Atlantic to Ottawa to conduct formal talks with Canadian leaders.

Moldovan aviation and security authorities confirmed that an unauthorized aerial vehicle had breached the nation’s sovereign airspace from across the Ukrainian border on Tuesday. Officials in the Eastern European country, which sits directly southwest of Ukraine, indicated that initial technical data identified the uncrewed system as a Shahed-type drone, which serves as the primary long-range attack platform utilized by Russian forces.

According to reports issued by officials in Chișinău, the drone crossed into Moldovan territorial airspace on two separate occasions during the late afternoon. The repeated border breaches compelled civilian aviation authorities to execute immediate precautionary measures and temporarily order the closure of the country's national airspace to protect commercial and VIP flights.

The documented timing of the uncrewed vehicle's initial entry into national airspace, recorded at approximately 4:20 p.m., aligned precisely with the scheduled departure window during which Zelenskyy's transport was finalizing preparations to lift off for Oslo. The simultaneous nature of the airspace breach and the flight's preparation heightened concerns regarding the security of VIP transits in the immediate border region.

Moldovan government representatives subsequently clarified the sequence of events to Reuters, stating that the Ukrainian presidential flight was instructed to remain grounded until the airborne hazards had safely cleared the sector. Air traffic controllers and defense personnel only granted full takeoff clearance once surveillance confirmed that the drones had completely vacated the surrounding airspace.

Further flight tracking and surveillance data shared in a separate official release revealed an erratic path taken by the wandering UAV. After its initial entry into Moldova, the Shahed drone crossed into the airspace of neighboring Romania—a member of the NATO alliance—before turning back into northwestern Moldovan airspace.

The incident eventually culminated in the uncrewed aircraft crashing in the Glodeni district, located in the northwestern region of Moldova. While the ensuing impact triggered an immediate ground fire that required emergency intervention, Moldovan administrative authorities confirmed that no human casualties or serious injuries were reported at the crash site.

The airspace violation represents part of a recurring pattern along the periphery of the Ukrainian battlefield, where Russian military forces regularly deploy large barrages of Shahed loitering munitions accompanied by radar-saturating decoy drones. These extensive aerial barrages occasionally drift away from intended targets inside Ukraine, crossing adjacent international boundaries into neighboring sovereign nations like Romania, Poland, and Moldova.

The recurring drift of military drones into adjacent sovereign air corridors has generated sharp warnings from Western defense officials. Leadership within NATO has previously asserted that Moscow intentionally allows or routes drones across Eastern European airspace to gauge the air defense readiness, detection capabilities, and response times of neighboring countries, though authorities in the Kremlin have consistently dismissed and denied these claims.

Neither the Ukrainian presidential administration nor Zelenskyy's immediate communications office responded to formal requests for clarification and comment submitted by news outlets outside of regular working hours. Meanwhile, the close call in Moldova serves as a stark reminder of the fragile security environment enveloping Eastern European airspace as neighboring states continue monitoring rogue drone incursions.
