A video circulating on social media that appears to show Kenya's government launching a new vessel on Lake Victoria has been exposed as a fabrication. The clip, which spread amid President William Ruto's ongoing rollout of infrastructure projects, was in fact filmed at a shipyard in India months before the claim emerged — and the vessel it shows has no connection to Kenya whatsoever.
The false claim gained traction through a Facebook post published on June 29, 2026, which asserted that the president had "officially launched the MV NGEGE into the waters of Lake Victoria." The post described the alleged launch as another milestone in Kenya's drive to restore affordable water transport, claiming the ship had been built locally by Kenya Shipyards Limited under a government programme meant to improve connectivity, bolster trade, support fishing communities and ease pressure on roads around the lake region.
The accompanying footage showed a large crowd cheering as a sizable vessel appeared to slide into Africa's largest freshwater lake, which Kenya shares with Uganda and Tanzania. But AFP Fact Check traced the video to its true origin: a launch ceremony held on April 30, 2026, at Kudroli Bengre in the Thannirubhavi area of Mangalore, a coastal city in southwestern India's Karnataka state.
The original recording, more than 100 minutes long, is titled "Launching ceremony of C 312 Hansa Anholt" and was published by Chowgule Shipyards. According to its description, the ship is an 8,500-deadweight-tonne diesel-electric, ice class 1B multipurpose dry cargo vessel built for Leonhardt & Blumberg, a German ship management company. A frame-by-frame comparison between the two videos found the vessels identical, with matching details including a yellow crane and a floodlight tower.
No evidence supports the Kenyan claims. AFP Fact Check found no announcement from the Kenyan government, the Kenya Ports Authority or Kenya Shipyards Limited regarding the commissioning or launch of any vessel called MV Ngege. A review of Kenyan media coverage from the period likewise turned up no reports of such an event taking place.
The timing also falls apart under scrutiny. On June 29 — the very day the purported Kisumu launch was said to have happened — President Ruto was in Nairobi presiding over the commissioning of the Ksh3.8 billion (about $29.3 million), 820-metre Ngong Road-Naivasha Road flyover.
The fabricated post nonetheless tapped into genuine news momentum. During a March 24, 2026 visit to Siaya County, Ruto unveiled a Ksh9.5 billion (roughly $73.3 million) investment package aimed at strengthening the blue economy along Lake Victoria. In a statement posted to his official Facebook page, he said the funds were intended to boost economic activity in the lake region while creating jobs and improving livelihoods for residents.
That package included the groundbreaking of the Ksh1 billion (about $7.7 million) Usenge Pier in Bondo constituency, a Kenya Shipyards Limited project designed to improve water transport between Kisumu and Homa Bay counties. Other elements include the completed Homa Bay pier, a pier under construction at Muhuru Bay in Migori County, ten fish landing sites spread across five riparian counties stretching from Busia to Migori, a Ksh250 million (about $1.4 million) fishermen's rescue centre in Siaya, and Ksh70 million (about $540,000) each earmarked for rescue boats and fish cages.
Notably absent from any of those announcements, however, was the launch of a new ship. The viral post appears to have exploited the credibility of Ruto's real development agenda by attaching it to unrelated foreign footage — a reminder that even plausible-sounding infrastructure claims deserve verification before being shared.
