Wicknell Chivayo, one of Zimbabwe's most recognizable and controversial business figures, has died in a helicopter crash that claimed the lives of all six people on board, his family confirmed on Thursday. The 43-year-old businessman and his wife, Lucy Muteke, were among the victims of the Wednesday evening disaster, which occurred in the Marondera rural area approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) east of the capital, Harare.

The aircraft went down at around 17:00 local time (15:00 GMT), according to police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi. Government officials confirmed that two of the six occupants were pilots, while the remaining four were passengers. The group had been traveling from Gandami in the Chikomba district, where Chivayo and his wife were in the process of building a rural residence, state broadcaster ZBC reported. The helicopter crashed at Kudenga Farm roughly 40 minutes after takeoff.

Herbert Chivayo, a family spokesperson, told ZBC that relatives were devastated by the tragedy. "We are at a loss for words after the tragic news," he said, describing the loss of both the businessman and his wife as a profound blow to the family. The cause of the crash remained unknown as of Thursday, and police said an investigation was underway. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene on Wednesday evening.

Government spokesman Nick Mangwana had earlier confirmed the incident on social media platform X, stating that the helicopter was carrying "a prominent businessman, three other passengers and two pilots." He added that preliminary information indicated there were no survivors. Authorities did not immediately release the identities of all those on board, pending notification of next of kin.

Chivayo's death marks the end of a remarkable and polarizing career that spanned government contracts, philanthropy, and an outsized social media presence. As managing director of Intratrek Zimbabwe, he secured some of the country's most lucrative state deals, none more prominent than a $172 million (£128 million) solar power project in Gwanda awarded by the state-owned Zimbabwe Power Company. That project, however, became entangled in years of legal disputes, casting a shadow over his business legacy.

His dealings also drew scrutiny over the procurement of materials for Zimbabwe's disputed 2023 elections. The country's anti-corruption commission investigated allegations surrounding contracts awarded to South African company Ren-Form but closed the inquiry in 2025, stating it had found no evidence linking Chivayo or the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to any wrongdoing. Throughout his career, Chivayo consistently denied allegations of impropriety tied to his business activities.

Beyond his commercial ventures, Chivayo cultivated a public persona defined by opulence and generosity. Widely known as "Sir Wicknell" — a title he frequently used publicly and on social media despite never having received a British knighthood — he was famous for gifting luxury cars and large sums of money to musicians, religious leaders, and other public figures, often broadcasting these gestures to his substantial online following. His lavish lifestyle and displays of wealth made him a constant subject of public fascination and debate in Zimbabwe.

His influence extended well beyond his home country. Chivayo frequently publicized his access to African heads of state, sharing photographs of meetings with leaders including Zambia's Hakainde Hichilema, South Africa's Cyril Ramaphosa, Tanzania's Samia Suluhu Hassan, and Eswatini's King Mswati III.

Kenya's President William Ruto, who had previously appeared in public alongside Chivayo, paid tribute to him as a "dear friend" and extended condolences to the families of all those killed in the crash. "I will remember him for his friendship, his energy and his deep conviction in the possibilities of our continent," Ruto said in a statement.

Chivayo's repeated access to Ruto and Kenya's State House had drawn questions from Kenyan opposition figures, who scrutinized the closeness between the Zimbabwean businessman and the Kenyan president. The relationship underscored Chivayo's unusual ability to move between business, politics, and celebrity circles across the continent.

The crash has stunned Zimbabwe's business and political establishment. Chivayo was a figure who defied easy categorization — part entrepreneur, part showman, part philanthropist — and his death leaves unanswered questions about his sprawling business interests, including the long-stalled Gwanda solar project. The investigation into the crash is expected to examine weather conditions, mechanical factors, and flight operations, though authorities have not yet indicated what may have caused the aircraft to go down.

For a man who built his public image on visibility and spectacle, Chivayo's final journey was tragically private: a quiet trip to check on a rural home under construction. The loss of both him and his wife in the same accident has compounded the grief for a family now confronting an unexpected and public mourning.

The crash also raises broader concerns about aviation safety in Zimbabwe, where helicopter travel is frequently used by wealthy businesspeople and officials to navigate long distances over difficult terrain. While the country's aviation authorities have not yet commented on the broader implications, the incident is likely to renew attention on oversight of private and chartered flights.

As news of the deaths spread, tributes and reactions poured in from across Zimbabwe's entertainment, religious, and business communities — many of them beneficiaries of Chivayo's widely publicized generosity. For his critics, his death closes a chapter on a business career marked by controversy. For his admirers, it represents the loss of a larger-than-life figure whose generosity and ambition left an indelible mark on the nation's public imagination.

Police have said investigations into the crash are continuing, and further details about the victims and the circumstances of the accident are expected to emerge in the coming days.
