Israeli security forces have eliminated Nael Abu Obeid, the senior commander of Hamas's Rafah Brigade, in a precision military strike conducted in the southern Gaza Strip. The operation marks another significant blow to the upper operational echelons of the militant group's military wing following sustained targeted operations across the coastal enclave.
The targeted operation was carried out jointly by the Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet internal security agency on Tuesday. Security officials confirmed that Abu Obeid was directly targeted and killed after intelligence tracking pinpointed his location in southern Gaza, effectively neutralizing one of the highest-ranking field commanders remaining in the southern sector.
Abu Obeid had risen to the top of the Rafah Brigade's command structure after serving as a pivotal figure among Hamas’s regional leadership. Military officials identified him as an essential operative responsible for coordinating and directing numerous hostile offensives and direct attacks against Israeli troops operating in the area.
His ascension to the top command role in Rafah came following the death of his predecessor, Mohammad Shabanah, who was eliminated by the IDF in May 2025. Following Shabanah's death, Abu Obeid took over full leadership of the brigade, having previously gathered extensive operational experience across various subordinate commands within the organization.
Prior to assuming the brigade’s overall leadership, Abu Obeid had held several high-ranking tactical assignments. He served as the deputy commander of the Rafah Brigade and previously commanded both the Tel al-Sultan Battalion and the Yibna Battalion. His comprehensive background across these key southern units made him central to organizing Hamas's tactical maneuvers and armed resistance.
The elimination of Abu Obeid drew immediate confirmation and high-level response from Israel's political leadership. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a joint statement acknowledging the success of the strike and reaffirming their administration's strategic posture regarding Hamas operatives.
In their joint address, Netanyahu and Katz underscored the uncompromising approach of the Israeli security apparatus, emphasizing that their message remains clear that no terrorist is immune from targeting and that Hamas will ultimately have no future presence or governing authority inside the Gaza Strip.
Following the announcement of the commander's death, the IDF stated that its forces remain positioned and actively deployed throughout the operational sector in accordance with existing operational frameworks. The military emphasized that its forces will maintain an active operational posture to identify and remove any emerging threats directed at Israeli forces or territory.
The strike on Abu Obeid was part of an intensified series of targeted operations against Hamas command nodes across the enclave. Earlier on Tuesday, the IDF and the Shin Bet confirmed that another senior commander had been killed in the northern sector of the Gaza Strip during a separate strike on Monday night.
That northern operation eliminated Ahmad Batash, who served as the commander of Hamas's Jabaliya Battalion within the Northern Gaza Brigade. Batash was a key figure within the organization’s armed wing, the Izzadin al-Qassam Brigades, overseeing vital operational sectors in northern Gaza.
Military officials detailed that Batash played a critical logistical role for the Northern Gaza Brigade, managing critical supply chains and overseeing the distribution of weapons, ammunition, and tactical equipment to militant cells actively engaged in combat operations throughout the northern front.
The deaths of Abu Obeid and Batash follow closely on the heels of another high-profile strike that neutralized Hamas's command leadership in central-southern Gaza. Late last week, Israeli forces and the Shin Bet killed Muhammad Yazouri, the commander of Hamas’s Khan Yunis Brigade, during a targeted strike in the Khan Yunis region.
Yazouri had established a prominent career within the Khan Yunis Brigade prior to his promotion to top commander. His prior roles included serving as the brigade's deputy commander, leading its specialized combat support battalion, and serving as the chief director of its intelligence department.
Throughout his tenure as brigade commander, Yazouri was directly responsible for organizing and managing the brigade’s armed cadres. Security sources indicated that he actively planned, advanced, and executed a series of targeted terror operations directed against both Israeli civilians and IDF personnel operating in the sector.
The coordinated strikes against Abu Obeid, Batash, and Yazouri reflect a continuous campaign by the Israeli military and intelligence apparatus to systematically dismantle Hamas's regional brigade and battalion hierarchies across northern and southern Gaza, targeting experienced leaders responsible for both tactical logistics and battlefield command.
