Fabricated AI Video Misleadingly Depicts Indonesian Volcano Eruption Amid Real-World Travel Chaos

A dramatic video circulating across social media platforms that claims to show a terrifying, close-up view of an Indonesian volcano erupting over a residential neighborhood has been revealed as an artificial intelligence creation. The viral imagery emerged following genuine volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau in September 2026, confusing viewers by blending high-tech digital fabrication with a real-world natural event.

The authentic geological event saw Mount Anak Krakatau erupt repeatedly throughout September 2026. The volcano discharged massive plumes of volcanic ash into the atmosphere and sent fountains of glowing lava shooting into the sky, prompting widespread emergency responses and logistical headaches across the country.

The actual eruption caused severe disruptions to regional and international transportation networks. Widespread flight cancellations grounded thousands of domestic and international services, with Indonesia’s primary aviation hub, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, experiencing massive operational halts that left more than 340,000 travelers stranded.

Amid the unfolding situation, a misleading clip began circulating widely on social media platforms. On September 8, 2026, a Facebook post shared the footage with a dramatic caption describing it as a close-up shot capturing nature at its most destructive during an eruption in Indonesia, misleading viewers about the true nature of the scene.

The shared video presented a dramatic panorama of an erupting volcano situated immediately adjacent to a crowded residential community. In the clip, fiery molten rock appeared to blast skyward while local residents were depicted desperately fleeing their homes in panic.

However, the creator of the video confirmed to AFP that the footage was entirely synthetic and bore no connection to any authentic disaster. The individual, originally from Montreal, Canada, stated that the content had been generated exclusively using artificial intelligence software rather than recorded by a camera on the ground.

The Canadian creator explained that his original post had clearly carried an explicit "AI content" designation and that his profile bio openly identified his work as "AI-powered." He emphasized that the clip was never created with the intention of deceiving the public or being circulated as real documentary footage.

Reflecting on the viral spread of the post, the creator observed that the widespread belief in the clip's authenticity underscored how rapidly generative video technology is evolving. As digital generation tools become increasingly sophisticated, convincing visuals can easily be detached from their original disclaimers and spread without proper context.

In addition to the creator's admission, basic geographical realities completely disprove the video’s depiction of the eruption. Mount Anak Krakatau is located on an uninhabited island situated in the waters between the major Indonesian landmasses of Sumatra and Java, making any immediate neighborhood setting impossible.

While the fabricated video positioned suburban houses directly beneath the volcano's slopes, the nearest real-world communities are located far across the water in the provinces of Lampung on Sumatra and Banten on Java. As a result, the physical geography depicted in the viral post is fundamentally incompatible with the actual location of Anak Krakatau.

Eyewitness accounts from the area further contradicted the viral video's portrayal of the event. Destinasi Ocy, a Jakarta-based content creator who documents fishing expeditions throughout Indonesia, confirmed that she witnessed the real eruption on September 4 from the sea and branded the viral social media clip as an absolute fake.

Ocy recounted that she and a crew of twelve others had been fishing in the waters near Krakatau when deteriorating sea conditions compelled them to seek shelter near the volcano. Later that night, around 11:00 p.m., the group heard intense rumblings as the volcano began erupting violently in the dark.

As volcanic debris and falling material began landing directly on their fishing vessel, the group abandoned their activities and prioritized immediate survival. They quickly gathered their gear and navigated their boat away from the hazardous zone, confirming that the isolated island volcano cannot be seen looming directly over residential land.

A technical examination of the viral video also highlighted several visual flaws typical of current generative artificial intelligence models. Between the fifth and ninth seconds of the clip, figures positioned near parked vehicles exhibit noticeable shimmering and physical distortion, while individuals shown running toward the end of the clip display warped and malformed hands.

Independent automated detection confirmed the synthetic origin of the media as well, with Meta's AI analysis tool officially flagging the footage as having been generated with one of its proprietary models. The incident adds to a growing series of cases where fact-checkers have had to debunk synthetic volcanic disaster imagery presented as genuine natural events.
