Europe's natural gas costs climb toward winter — and household bills may follow

European wholesale natural gas prices have surged to levels far above where the year began, raising the prospect of costlier energy bills across the continent this winter. The benchmark Dutch TTF front-month contract traded above €66 per megawatt-hour on Tuesday, having touched more than €68 earlier in the day — more than double the roughly €29/MWh recorded at the start of 2026.

The rally reflects mounting market anxiety that the Strait of Hormuz will stay effectively shut through the heating season. The chokepoint normally handles close to one-fifth of the world's liquefied natural gas trade, and its disruption has tightened an already fragile supply picture just as Europe enters winter with unusually depleted inventories. Data from Gas Infrastructure Europe showed EU storage was only 62.99% full at the end of the gas day on 24 August — well below the five-year average of 79%, according to Argus Media analyst Natasha Fielding, who noted stocks had not been this low for the time of year since 2021, on the eve of the previous energy crisis. Germany's facilities stood at just 51% capacity, while the Netherlands held 44.3%.

There is some cushion: Oxford Economics estimates EU gas demand is running 15%–20% below 2021 levels, meaning the bloc can technically manage with leaner stockpiles. The trade-off is heavier reliance on spot LNG purchases during winter, which pits Europe against Asian buyers for the same cargoes — a competition analysts warn could drive prices even higher.

Wall Street sees substantial upside risk. Goldman Sachs researchers Samantha Dart and Laura Cyr argued current prices are insufficient for Europe to refill storage before spring, and estimated that if Middle Eastern energy flows recover only slowly through 2027, December 2026 TTF contracts would likely need to exceed €100/MWh — more than double their €50 baseline scenario. In a tighter squeeze, Oxford Economics suggested the EU might have to pause elements of its embargo on Russian gas, which accounted for roughly 12.5% of combined pipeline and LNG imports in 2025. Under legislation adopted in January 2026, new Russian imports were banned from 18 March, with a full phase-out due by end-2027.

Consumers will not feel the pinch immediately. Wholesale spikes take time to filter into retail tariffs because importers hedge and lock in supply under long-term contracts, so the effective price paid on imported gas lags headline market rates. As those agreements roll over, however, costs creep closer to spot levels and eventually surface in household bills when rates are reset.

The speed of that pass-through varies sharply by country. Households on variable-rate contracts are typically hit first, and liberalised retail markets adjust faster, Fielding said. On average, Oxford Economics puts full transmission of wholesale moves into consumer prices at around six months — but in Germany and Austria, where fixed-price deals lasting 12 to 24 months dominate, peak pass-through can take nearly a year. France, Italy and Spain tend to respond within months, while the Netherlands reacts almost instantly.

Among major economies, Italy is judged the most vulnerable to a price shock, combining relatively quick pass-through with above-average dependence on gas — though it happens to hold among the continent's healthiest storage reserves. Much, ultimately, hinges on the weather: with gas still the backbone of European home heating, a prolonged cold snap would stoke demand and could compound the squeeze. Even before the latest spike, Oxford Economics projected eurozone consumer energy prices could run as much as 15% higher year-on-year in the fourth quarter.
