Armed Russian Drone Found on Poland's Baltic Shore Carried Fragmentation Warhead, Authorities Confirm

Polish military and judicial authorities have confirmed that an uncrewed Russian aerial vehicle recovered along the country’s Baltic shoreline was armed with an active, explosive payload. The discovery of the armed drone, which came ashore near a coastal resort, has heightened regional defense concerns and prompted immediate forensic action by national security specialists.

According to official statements delivered on Wednesday by a spokesperson for the investigating prosecutor’s office in Poznań to the Polish Press Agency (PAP), the uncrewed aircraft was outfitted with a fragmentation warhead coupled with a live detonator. The disclosure confirms that the aircraft was not a harmless surveillance asset or unarmed decoy, but a combat-ready system capable of inflicting severe blast and shrapnel damage upon impact.

The uncrewed aerial vehicle was initially discovered on Monday near the seaside settlement of Rusinowo, situated along the Baltic Sea coastline in north-western Poland. The arrival of an armed foreign military system in a civilian coastal district triggered swift coordination between regional law enforcement, civilian authorities, and the Polish armed forces to secure the perimeter and neutralize any imminent danger to the public.

Special forces units from the Polish military were rapidly deployed to the beach at Rusinowo to handle the dangerous ordnance. Operating under specialized defense protocols, military bomb disposal technicians successfully separated the fragmentation warhead from the drone's primary airframe before carrying out a controlled defusal operation directly on the shoreline.

Following the safe defusal of the explosive device, the dismantled drone components and remnants of the payload were taken into military custody. The prosecutor's office confirmed that the hardware has been transferred to a specialized military installation, where defense experts are conducting exhaustive forensic and technical examinations to assess the aircraft's build, flight data, and equipment.

Investigators have officially identified the recovered aircraft as a Russian-made Gerbera-2 model. Polish defense and judicial authorities are now working to establish the origin of its launch, its navigational path, and whether its intrusion into the Baltic corridor was an intentional flight plan or the result of a navigational failure during active operations in the wider region.

A central element of the ongoing probe involves determining whether the Rusinowo discovery is directly connected to an airspace violation recorded in neighboring Lithuania. Late on Tuesday night, Lithuanian air defense units intercepted a Russian combat drone that crossed into Lithuanian sovereign airspace, shooting it down before it could penetrate further into the Baltic nation's territory.

Officials from the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence subsequently confirmed that the hostile uncrewed aerial vehicle brought down over their territory was likewise fitted with explosives. The presence of live ordnance on both aircraft has reinforced security concerns among Baltic and Central European authorities regarding the operational nature of Russian drone activities near the borders of allied nations.

Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz addressed the situation, indicating that evidence points to the possibility that the drone discovered on the Polish coast had also traversed Lithuanian airspace earlier in its journey. The defense chief outlined a probable path linking the recent events across multiple international boundaries in the Baltic theater.

Based on preliminary assessments shared by Kosiniak-Kamysz, the uncrewed craft appears to have breached Lithuanian airspace, where countermeasures were initially attempted to neutralize it. Following those containment efforts, the drone crossed the border into the territory of Kaliningrad—the Russian exclave situated between Poland and Lithuania—before continuing its trajectory out over the waters of the Baltic Sea and ultimately coming down along the Polish coastline.

In light of the shared flight trajectories and common defense risks, Warsaw and Vilnius have established close bilateral cooperation. Defence Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz affirmed that Polish and Lithuanian authorities are actively pursuing a joint investigation, sharing telemetry, technical findings, and defense intelligence regarding both airspace incursions.

The drone discovery occurs against a tense geopolitical backdrop for Poland, an essential member of both the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). As a primary geographic hub and an indispensable political and military supporter of Ukraine in its defense against Russia's full-scale invasion, Poland occupies a pivotal position on the alliance's eastern flank.

Consequently, Warsaw considers Moscow an active and persistent national security threat. Tensions between the two countries were further exacerbated earlier in the week following a Russian drone strike on Sunday that struck a train traveling from Kyiv to Warsaw just before it reached the Polish frontier, an incident that severely alarmed the Polish government.

The confirmed presence of a live fragmentation warhead on a Russian drone recovered within Polish territory is expected to further intensify vigilance over regional airspace security and coastal monitoring. As military specialists continue their technical evaluation of the Gerbera-2 craft, Poland and its regional allies remain focused on addressing the growing hazards posed by armed combat drones operating along NATO's eastern frontier.
